City of L’Aquila is still marked by its medieval city centre, which also determines urban and transport planning. The territory is rich of natural and cultural heritage. L’Aquila itself is proud of its several important monuments and buildings with historical and architectural value.

L’Aquila thus needs suitable PT solutions that provide the necessary mobility without affecting or even damaging the cultural heritage, providing services in narrow streets, passing through hundreds of listed buildings. The solutions should also include the adjacent smaller municipalities of the Province. The particular situation of L'Aquila is marked by the fact that the city centre still is a residential area along with blocks of offices, so that there is a need for efficient PT not only during rush hours but throughout the day.

Furthermore, increasing motorisation affects the environment and the quality of life. L’Aquila hence needs a PT that represents an alternative to using private cars and that reduces pollution. To tackle this issue, L’Aquila is building an overground metro that is generating a lot of discussions about its real utility as well as on the effects of the electrification. This discussion needs to be deepened through further studies and exchange of experiences.

The City of L’Aquila, Department for public constructions and Department for Planning, will work in all five technical work packages and closely cooperate with the Università degli Studi dell’Aquila in order to achieve complementary effects.
