The City of Görlitz has been divided after World War II into a German (Görlitz) and a Polish half (Zgorzelec), resulting in two different cities with distinctive patterns of developments, including independent PT systems. Since the break-down of communism in both Poland and the GDR, a rapprochement between Görlitz and Zgorzelec has taken place, which results in the “European City Görlitz/ Zgorzelec”.

Together they also apply to become European Cultural Capital 2010. The common initiatives also have clear repercussions such as the building of new bridges between the cities to overcome the geographical separation by the River Neisse, or the introduction of a cross border municipal PT service.

The city planning office of Görlitz plays an important role in this process: it is responsible for city development, for spatial planning, green spaces and transport planning.

The City of Görlitz arranged the Kick-off meeting for the TRANSPOWER project in September 2006. Unfortunately, after that, the responsible person left the city administration. Therefore, Görlitz has not anymore the capacity to be part of the TRANSPOWER network and left the project in April 2007. TRANSPOWER took then the City of Skopje on board.
