The Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, together with its agencies is the main financer and organiser of transport and transport technology research at national level in Austria.
The co-ordinator of national transport research is the Department of Mobility and Transport Technologies, which is responsible for strategic and financial planning of Research & Technological Development activities, as well as for priority setting and policy and programme designs. It is also the contact point for both national and international research and policy coordination. National transport research has been recently restructured and is now organised in a consistent set of multi-annual research and technology development programmes, in line with the federal ministry's goals and objectives in the field of mobility and transport technology. These programmes make a substantial contribution in achieving transport und environmental policy goals, such as increasing the efficiency of the transport system, improving the inter-modality between the transport modes as well as increasing the sustainability, safety and security in transport.
The Department is also actively involved in a wide range of international co-ordination activities in transport research.
